Home composting

It is an activity that requires certain knowledge and compliance with all necessary procedures to maximize the result.

A simple procedure for households.

  1. Choosing a composter: To begin with, it is advisable to choose a suitable composter. There are many types of composters, from simple garden composters to sophisticated indoor composters. When choosing, you need a suitable available space, the amount of organic waste and aesthetic preferences.
  2. Collection of organic waste: Organic waste such as kitchen scraps (fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, shells), grass clippings, leaves, sawdust and the like are collected in the composter. It is necessary to ensure that plastic (petrochemical), metal or glass objects, as well as meat, meat, dairy products and cereals are placed in the composter.
  3. Layering of materials: Organic waste in the composter should be layered. Layers should contain a mixture of green materials (eg fresh grass clippings) which supply nitrogen and brown materials (eg dry leaves, sawdust) which provide carbon. This ratio of nitrogen and carbon helps to optimize the composting process.
  4. Aeration of Compost: It is important to aerate the compost to promote the formation of important factors. This is achieved by mixing or turning the layers in the composter, or by using composting equipment with ventilation.
  5. Monitoring: Compost should be moist enough to promote rapid decomposition of organic material. In case of such weather, it is necessary to add water, but in case of excessive rain, a good drainage capacity of the compost must be ensured.
  6. Time and patience: The composting process can take several weeks to several months, depending on the amount of organic material, temperature, humidity and aeration. It is to be patient and regularly monitor the state of the compost.
  7. Use of finished compost: After the composting process is finished, the finished compost is ready for use. It can be used as a fertilizer for garden plants, beds, flowers, or garden lawns, thereby contributing to their health and growth.
